I love to study Race, Sex and
Gender, and Social Class
I am very interested in the educational process and how people of different cultures relate with other individuals and with other cultures. I am particularly interested in the role of language in communicating culture, value, and intent regarding stratification systems. Also, I care deeply about issues of education, diversity, and social stratification, and I am a strong advocate of the community college as an institution.
I love learning and I love people who love learning! I am a former Air Force officer, active duty during the first Gulf War. I started teaching college level Sociology in 1990. In High School I was a “brainiac,” graduating as Salutatorian, a student leader, plus the Drum Major of our marching band! I am a musician and a singer in my spare time and I love studying the media (OK, I like to watch commercials, TV, and movies!!!) I am an avid fan of documentaries on the Independent Film Network and Sundance Channel; “The West Wing;” certain “reality” TV shows such as “The Amazing Race” or “Top Chef;” and movies where no one gets blown up, raped or killed!
I have always been a teacher, from the time I was a small child, and it's the thing I love to do best, other than writing, my newest, most fun activity! I was a student Park Ranger in high school, and led a Brownie troop in college. I attended the March on Washington DC in 2013 with dear friends, and have recently discovered the power of the selfie!! I'm penning a book, a memoir, and hope to take it up full time eventually. I would miss teaching too much to ever leave it completely, but after a student brought a noose to school to threaten me with recently, I have found my voice and have so much more to write about suddenly! Keep your eyes peeled for my story!
